Det var i det andre året av kong Dareios' regjering at Aggeus og Sakarja, sønn av Addo, profeterte for jødene i Juda og Jerusalem i Herrens, Israels Guds, navn som var over dem.

Now in the second year of the reign of Darius Aggeus and Zacharias the son of Addo, the prophets, prophesied unto the Jews in Jewry and Jerusalem in the name of the Lord God of Israel, which was upon them.

Da stod Serubabel, sønn av Salatiel, og Jeshua, sønn av Josadak, opp og begynte å bygge Herrens hus i Jerusalem, med Herrens profeter hos seg som hjalp dem.

Then stood up Zorobabel the son of Salatiel, and Jesus the son of Josedec, and began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, the prophets of the Lord being with them, and helping them.

På samme tid kom Sisinnes, guvernøren over Syria og Fønikia, sammen med Sathrabuzanes og hans ledsagere, og sa til dem,

At the same time came unto them Sisinnes the governor of Syria and Phenice, with Sathrabuzanes and his companions, and said unto them,

Hvem har gitt dere tillatelse til å bygge dette huset og dette taket, og utføre alle disse tingene? Og hvem er arbeiderne som utfører disse tingene?

By whose appointment do ye build this house and this roof, and perform all the other things? and who are the workmen that perform these things?

Likevel oppnådde de eldste blant jødene gunst, fordi Herren hadde besøkt fangenskapet;

Nevertheless the elders of the Jews obtained favour, because the Lord had visited the captivity;

Og de ble ikke hindret fra å bygge før et budskap ble gitt til Dareios om dem og et svar mottatt.

And they were not hindered from building, until such time as signification was given unto Darius concerning them, and an answer received.

Kopi av brevene som Sisinnes, guvernøren over Syria og Fønikia, og Sathrabuzanes med sine ledsagere, herskere i Syria og Fønikia, skrev og sendte til Dareios; Til kong Dareios, hilsen:

The copy of the letters which Sisinnes, governor of Syria and Phenice, and Sathrabuzanes, with their companions, rulers in Syria and Phenice, wrote and sent unto Darius; To king Darius, greeting:

La alt være kjent for vår herre kongen, at når vi kom inn i landet Judea, og gikk inn i byen Jerusalem, fant vi de eldste blant jødene som var av fangenskapet,

Let all things be known unto our lord the king, that being come into the country of Judea, and entered into the city of Jerusalem we found in the city of Jerusalem the ancients of the Jews that were of the captivity

Byggende et stort og nytt hus til Herren, med tilhugget og kostbare steiner, og tømmeret var allerede lagt på veggene.

Building an house unto the Lord, great and new, of hewn and costly stones, and the timber already laid upon the walls.

Og disse arbeidene blir utført med stor fart, og arbeidet går fremover med fremgang i deres hender, og med all ære og flid blir det utført.

And those works are done with great speed, and the work goeth on prosperously in their hands, and with all glory and diligence is it made.

Da spurte vi disse eldste og sa: 'På hvis befaling bygger dere dette huset og legger fundamentene for disse verkene?'

Then asked we these elders, saying, By whose commandment build ye this house, and lay the foundations of these works?

For å kunne gi deg kjennskap, krevde vi av dem, hvem som var de ledende, og ba om navnene deres skriftlig på de viktigste mennene.

Therefore to the intent that we might give knowledge unto thee by writing, we demanded of them who were the chief doers, and we required of them the names in writing of their principal men.

Så ga de oss dette svaret: 'Vi er Herrens tjenere, han som skapte himmel og jord.'

So they gave us this answer, We are the servants of the Lord which made heaven and earth.

Og når det gjelder dette huset, ble det bygget for mange år siden av en konge i Israel, stor og mektig, og ble fullført.

And as for this house, it was builded many years ago by a king of Israel great and strong, and was finished.

Men da våre fedre provoserte Gud til vrede og syndet mot Israels Herre, han som er i himmelen, overgav han dem i Nabukadnesars, kongen av Babylon, kaldeernes makt;

But when our fathers provoked God unto wrath, and sinned against the Lord of Israel which is in heaven, he gave them over into the power of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, of the Chaldees;

Som rev ned huset, brente det og førte folket bort som fanger til Babylon.

Who pulled down the house, and burned it, and carried away the people captives unto Babylon.

Men i det første året kong Kyros hersket over landet Babylon, skrev kong Kyros at dette huset skulle bygges opp igjen.

But in the first year that king Cyrus reigned over the country of Babylon Cyrus the king wrote to build up this house.

Og de hellige karene av gull og sølv, som Nabukadnesar hadde tatt ut fra huset i Jerusalem, og satt i sitt eget tempel, de tok Kyros kongen fram igjen fra templet i Babylon, og de ble overlevert til Serubabel og Sanabassar herskeren,

And the holy vessels of gold and of silver, that Nabuchodonosor had carried away out of the house at Jerusalem, and had set them in his own temple those Cyrus the king brought forth again out of the temple at Babylon, and they were delivered to Zorobabel and to Sanabassarus the ruler,

Med befaling om at han skulle ta de samme karene og sette dem i templet i Jerusalem; og at Herrens tempel skulle bygges opp på sin plass.

With commandment that he should carry away the same vessels, and put them in the temple at Jerusalem; and that the temple of the Lord should be built in his place.

Da Sanabassar, da han kom hit, la fundamentene til Herrens hus i Jerusalem; og fra den tiden fram til nå står det fortsatt under bygging og er ennå ikke fullført.

Then the same Sanabassarus, being come hither, laid the foundations of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem; and from that time to this being still a building, it is not yet fully ended.

Nå derfor, hvis det synes godt for kongen, la ham søke blant opptegnelsene til kong Kyros:

Now therefore, if it seem good unto the king, let search be made among the records of king Cyrus:

Og hvis det finnes at byggingen av Herrens hus i Jerusalem ble gjort med samtykke fra kong Kyros, og hvis vår herre kongen er så sinned, la ham gi oss beskjed om det.

And if it be found that the building of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem hath been done with the consent of king Cyrus, and if our lord the king be so minded, let him signify unto us thereof.

Da bød kong Dareios å søke blant opptegnelsene i Babylon; og så i Ekbatana, palasset, som er i landet Media, ble det funnet en rull hvor disse tingene var nedskrevet.

Then commanded king Darius to seek among the records at Babylon: and so at Ecbatane the palace, which is in the country of Media, there was found a roll wherein these things were recorded.

I det første året av Kyros' regjering, bød kong Kyros at Herrens hus i Jerusalem skulle bygges opp igjen, der de bærer frem ofre med konstant ild.

In the first year of the reign of Cyrus king Cyrus commanded that the house of the Lord at Jerusalem should be built again, where they do sacrifice with continual fire:

Dets høyde skal være seksti alen og bredden seksti alen, med tre rader av hugget stein, og en rad av nytt tre fra det landet; og utgiftene derav skal utbetales fra kong Kyros' hus.

Whose height shall be sixty cubits and the breadth sixty cubits, with three rows of hewn stones, and one row of new wood of that country; and the expences thereof to be given out of the house of king Cyrus:

Og at de hellige karene av Herrens hus, både av gull og sølv, som Nabukadnesar tok ut fra huset i Jerusalem og brakte til Babylon, skulle gjenopprettes til huset i Jerusalem, og settes på det stedet de var før.

And that the holy vessels of the house of the Lord, both of gold and silver, that Nabuchodonosor took out of the house at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, should be restored to the house at Jerusalem, and be set in the place where they were before.

Og han bød også at Sisinnes, guvernøren over Syria og Fønikia, og Sathrabuzanes, og deres ledsagere, og de som ble utnevnt til herskere i Syria og Fønikia, skulle være forsiktige med å ikke blande seg inn i stedet, men la Serubabel, Herrens tjener, og guvernøren over Judea, og de eldste blant jødene, bygge Herrens hus på det stedet.

And also he commanded that Sisinnes the governor of Syria and Phenice, and Sathrabuzanes, and their companions, and those which were appointed rulers in Syria and Phenice, should be careful not to meddle with the place, but suffer Zorobabel, the servant of the Lord, and governor of Judea, and the elders of the Jews, to build the house of the Lord in that place.

Jeg har også beordret å ha det bygget opp helt igjen; og at de ser nøye til å hjelpe dem som er av jødenes fangenskap, til Herrens hus er ferdigstilt:

I have commanded also to have it built up whole again; and that they look diligently to help those that be of the captivity of the Jews, till the house of the Lord be finished:

Og ut av tributen fra Celosyria og Fønikia skal det gis en del nøye til disse mennene for Herrens offer, det vil si til Serubabel, guvernøren, for okser, værer og lam;

And out of the tribute of Celosyria and Phenice a portion carefully to be given these men for the sacrifices of the Lord, that is, to Zorobabel the governor, for bullocks, and rams, and lambs;

Og også korn, salt, vin og olje, og at kontinuerlig hvert år uten videre spørsmål, i henhold til hva prestene i Jerusalem vil angi å bli daglig brukt:

And also corn, salt, wine, and oil, and that continually every year without further question, according as the priests that be in Jerusalem shall signify to be daily spent:

At ofre kan bli gitt til den høyeste Gud for kongen og for hans barn, og at de kan be for deres liv.

That offerings may be made to the most high God for the king and for his children, and that they may pray for their lives.

Og han beordret at hvem som helst som skulle bryte, ja, eller gjøre narr av noe som tidligere er blitt sagt eller skrevet, fra sitt eget hus skulle et tre tas, og der skulle han bli hengt, og alle hans eiendeler beslaglagt for kongen.

And he commanded that whosoever should transgress, yea, or make light of any thing afore spoken or written, out of his own house should a tree be taken, and he thereon be hanged, and all his goods seized for the king.

Herren, hvis navn der blir påkalt, skal derfor fullstendig ødelegge enhver konge og nasjon som rekker ut sin hånd for å hindre eller skade Herrens hus i Jerusalem.

The Lord therefore, whose name is there called upon, utterly destroy every king and nation, that stretcheth out his hand to hinder or endamage that house of the Lord in Jerusalem.

Jeg, Dareios, kongen, har bestemt at dette skal gjøres med omhu, i tråd med disse tingene.

I Darius the king have ordained that according unto these things it be done with diligence.
